Fwar’s Disconnected is a debut full of intrigue. In an era of ‘alternative facts,’ it aptly blends lyrics of logic with the absurd, real instrumentation with synthetic textures, and truth with fiction. Home to a dysfunctional family of sounds (dial-up internet tones, strings & choirs squeezed through modular synthesisers and chunky percussion & bells), inviting textures prepare a backdrop for interesting subject matter ranging from the profit-driven private sector on ‘Mushrooms’ to the physical loneliness in an online world on ‘Big Empty Feelings’.
Composed, produced, and mixed chiefly by a lone character, the title Disconnected attests to its singular creator as well as its subject matter. Fwar is the electronica project of Nathan Moseley. With stylistic comparisons to the likes of Talking Heads, Pet Shop Boys & Caribou, Fwar struggles to be neatly categorised. According to Fwar (tongue never far from cheek), “Disconnected explores second-wave, post-truth blues & aspirational homegaze”.
On the inspiration behind the record, he says:
“Like most people, I spend a lot of time thinking about existence and whilst making this record, a thought that has been present throughout is how disconnected we are from the planet, our actions and each other. We boast about our engine sizes whilst the planet groans. Food that another human laboured over for hours heads for the bin. An animal called food is grown in disgusting but cheap conditions hardly thought about or seen. Every question is answered with a product. As lovers, we roll off each other and onto our phones, where, like baby birds, we wait with open mouths for mother media to spew straight down our gullets, a bellyache of misinformation etc. etc. It might all sound a bit cynical, but writing songs helps with trying to make a bit more sense of the world."
